GEOMETRY AT STAGE. SAMUEL SAAVEDRA
In the late nineties I was working with renowned architects and artists like Mariscal, Santiago Roqueta and Felix Planalech in a project led by Rosa Soler from Vilafranca. The goal was to re-design and manufacture new hydraulic tiles, paving materials deeply rooted in Mediterranean life. Today these tiles have become an almost luxury because of the workmanship and their high aesthetic quality.
Due to my goldsmith´s experience I was comissed to create the ¨stencils¨, vital metal tools used for transferring mosaic drawings onto cement. In the eighteenth and through to half of the nineteenth century there was an entire stencil industry.
Metallic stencil to produce 20 x 20 cm hydraulic tiles
I was impressed so much by this brief insight into the forgotten world of tiles that cement has become the main material in my personal work, I have received prizes for the pieces´ craft and design.
Today, ten years after this intensive work, I have created a mix between the stencils and the geometry of precious stones. These two worlds seem different in their final objectives, however they mix together in the creating process, in the drawing and in the craft they share a large similarity. It is an aesthetic luxury for those who recognize their cultural origins, a way of understanding life here and now.
